On the Dome

The highest point at Dawson City is the Dome and you are able to look down unto the city of Dawson City. The road is steep and windy. We went with Tom and Sharon in their car and that was a blessing as we were going to go up on our own with the truck and 5th wheel on our way out of Dawson City. The view was spectacular.

steam Engine Meseum

The steam engine meseum was interesting and part of Dawson City Meseum. Every so often you would see a lady dressed in the period dress walking down the streets of Dawson City and you would have to shake your head as you would start thinking you were translated back into time because of the surroundings. The ladies would be dressed similiar to the one standing in front of the steam engine.

An odd sign

We took this picture as the sign was funny to us as we have never seen one like it.

Diamond Tooth Gerties

A stay in Dawson City wouldn't be complete without a visit to Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall and take in the cancan girls show

Dawson City, Yukon

Dawson City is like being transformed back into time. The building are still like they were in the old west. Sidewalks are board walks instead of concrete , streets still are dirt roads(not paved). Dawson City is located 165 miles from Arctic Circle on the Yukon River at the junction with the Klondike River. Population 1,876. Dawson City was declared a national historic site in early 1960's. Many buildings have been restored, some reconstructed and other stabilized. The top pictured is one that Parks Canada has stabilized to show what perma frost does to

buildings over a period of time .

crossing Fraser River into Dawson City, Yukon

At the end of our journey on the Top of the World Highway, we came to Fraser River and the only way across was on George Black ferry. At 11 o'clock in the evening the sun was shining brightly as mid day.

Top of the world and the Top of the World Highway

This is the top of the world.

This also top of the world

THIS ALSO TOP OF THE WORLD

Top of the world highway connects Dawson City, Yukon to Tok, Alaska.
On the Alaska side, the highway is gravel from the border to Chicken, Alaska. Top of the World Highway is narrow, winding road. There are no guard rails. Some steep grades and some soft shoulders. But what great views and scenery. The road between Chicken to the border is also referred to as the "goat trail." We were told various reasons why we shouldn't go on the Top of the World Highway with our 5th wheel. But, all proved

to be wrong and the trip was well worth it. As any unmaintained road one must use wisdom and travel at a slower speed.

Flowers of Alaska

Alaska is very colorful with various types of flowers. Lupines cover hill sides, along roadsides and vacant lots as well as the fire weed flowers. In Denali State Park there are various alpine type flowers.

Chicken, Alaska-The last of the old frontier Alaska

Chicken is located 80 miles from Tok, Alaska, Population 21 in summer and 6 in winter. Although remote, Chicken is getting more and more traffic each year as the Klondike Loop grows in popularity. There is no city water, sewer or electric service in Chicken. However, it does have wells, generators and outhouses. Chicken was supposedly named by early miners who wanted to name their camp ptarmigan, but were unable to spell it and settled instead for chicken, the common name in the North for ptarmigan.
The older part of Chicken consists of restaurant, mercantile and salon. There are a couple of campgrounds, which we did not stay in, and a post office, which we didn't see. Early Chicken is best portrayed in a book "Tisha" which we read after we visited Chicken.

Fireweed

In Alaska where ever there was a fire the first growth is a flower called the fireweed and in some areas the hills are covered with the colour of magenta of the fireweed.

Coffee in Alaska

In Windsor, Ontario-Canada, we have Tim Horton's coffee restaurants what seems to be in every major intersection. Alaska has out done Windsor. There are a Espresso Huts what appears to be every half mile in every shape ( a coffee cup) and colour

Worthington Glacier State Recreation Site

From the parking lot there is a paved path up to the glacier. We went with Soozee in tow and me in sandals. We came to the end of paved path and we were allowed to continue to walk up to and onto the glacier. Stew and Soozee went on and Stew had the camera took a picture of Soozee on top of the glacier as I stayed behind because I wore sandals. Seeing that they were experiencing all the fun, I was determined to walk up to the glacier and off I went unaware that I was being photographed. I was glad that I did. once close up to the glacier it is dirty looking and is covered with sharp rock.
